SpiritTales

The Sacred Quest by D.M.A. Leggett. 1987 / 237 pages

This lucid work, by a life member of The Churches' Fellowship for Psychical and Spiritual Studies, challenges the pessimism of scientific materialism and endeavours to bridge the chasm which so frequently separates the religious interpretation of life. It is a balanced treatise in which Dr Leggett first considers the professed aims of higher education before focusing the reader's attention upon that evidence which suggests survival and reincarnation and which is provided by poetry, mysticism and the paranormal. To illustrate this the author draws from a wide variety of sources and gives attention to the light which these throw upon the nature of man and the very cogent reasons for thinking that spiritual evolution is the purpose of human life on this planet. The reasons for this belief and its implications are examined against the normally presented view of Christianity and the age-old problems of freewill and determinism, good and evil, love and justice. Increasingly, scientific materialism - although bestowing immense benefits upon mankind - is found wanting and it is for the emergent army of seekers after an alternative that Dr Leggett has written. With an extensive bibliography, this is an excellent book for those who are trying to formulate a personal philosophy.
